Disability Living Allowance

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a benefit for people under 65 whose disabilities affect their everyday lives. It does not matter how much money you have coming in, and you may get DLA whether you are working or not working.

DLA has two parts, the care component and the mobility component. You may get both parts or just one of them.  The care component is paid if you need help with personal care, although you do not have to have a carer. The mobility component is paid if you have problems getting around. The care component can be paid at three different rates (lowest, middle and highest) depending on how much care you need, and the mobility component can be paid at two rates (lower and higher).

Because the DLA claim form is long and complicated, it is a good idea to get some help in filling it in from, for example, a Citizens Advice Bureau.
