You may be able to get Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) if you are too sick to work, or you have a disability which means it is hard for you to work.

Employment and Support Allowance is paid to people who have ‘limited capability for work’ and are either not in paid work, or are not entitled to Statutory Sick Pay (if you are employed and you have been sick for less than 28 weeks, you usually get Statutory Sick Pay).

You may be able to get contributory ESA based on your national insurance contribution record, and/or you may be able to get income-related ESA because you are on a low income. Contributory ESA lasts for one year. Income-related ESA can be paid indefinitely as long as you meet the conditions. For income-related ESA you have to meet other conditions too, for example, your partner must not work 24 hours or more a week.
