National Work Life Week: Employers that have been involved

Tell us how you will be celebrating National Work Life Week

Public Health England

PHE ran a series of events and initiatives to celebrate National Work Life Week. Some of them included:

  • Holding a ‘Know Your Numbers’ event for staff across the East Midlands as part of National Work Life Week, and shared information around healthy work and flexible working through this event. (Know Your Numbers is an awareness week, run by Blood Pressure UK and supported by PHE, in which people are encouraged to get their blood pressure checked).
  • Going home on time. Walking during lunchtime. Not using the lifts. Eating healthily. They discussed whether colleagues had a device, such as a fit-bit or an app on their phone, which tracked daily steps. One of the team agreed to undertake a survey of colleagues and to advise of the availability of free phone apps.
  • Team to leave work on time for the week. Re-clarification to the team that there is no expectation to check emails/work, etc, after the working day.
  • The team planned a swimming session, walking group and drop-in yoga class.
  • All team staff were encouraged to eat lunches away from their desks, also to fit 5 minutes ‘fresh air and exercise’ into their lunchbreak.
  • Organised a walking team meeting.
  • Each office location identified their own exercise and healthy eating challenges for the week.

King’s College London

King’s College London’s National Work Life Week celebrations focused on flexible working and childcare. They sent a delegation to Working Families’ Work Life Week Conference, and took a lot away from the day.

Working collaboratively over the week, theDiversity & Inclusion and Organisation Development teams:

  • published case studies to showcase the individual and wider benefits of flexible working at King’s
  • hosted a Lunch and Learn to discuss and support flexible working with colleagues
  • launched their very first all staff, all student Childcare Survey to investigate the childcare needs of our community.

Organised a talk on Smarter Working during National Work Life Week.

Phoenix Insurance

Their working parents network held workshops offering advice on wellbeing and work life balance.

Simply Mums Recruitment Hub

Ran their first campaign called #WorkFlexPlay, which aims to promote the art of flexible working – giving mums the opportunity to ‘Work, Rest & Play’. They held a coffee morning event during National Work Life Week.

University of East London

Wrote a blog about National Work Life Week, focusing on flexible working.

Heriot Watt University

Heriot Watt got involved on Twitter. They sent an email out each day from their HR Director to staff about different elements of how the institution supports work life balance. They also ran an information session in a public space where people could drop by and ask questions or pick up leaflets.

Disclosure Scotland

The Organisational Development & Learning team extended an invite to colleagues to attend a catch up over coffee/tea (and no short amount of cake!) to find out some of the ways they can help to promote work life balance, as well as taking the opportunity to reflect on how they can do things differently to create something that works for families, people and the economy.

The Health and Wellbeing champion shared details of National Work Life Week – and talked about hydration, healthy eating, growing and using home grown food. They sent emails to staff to suggest activities such as taking at least 30 minutes away from their desk, desk stretches every half hour, sharing a healthy recipe, standing for meetings, increasing their intake of water.
